In the front is a monument to Cervantes.  He is shown overlooking his two most famous characters, Don Quixote on his horse Rocinante and Sancho Panza on his donkey.  The plaza in the 18th and 19th centuries was occupied by military barracks.   This site was chosen because of its proximity to the Palacio Royal.  The present day appearance was acquired during the Franco period.  In the background is the Edifico de España which was built in 1948.
