Generation of 98'
|This literary period was actually named in 1913 to designate a group of young writers, who following the defeat of Spain in the Spanish - American war (1898) formed a cultural rebirth of Spanish literature. The term was coined by the author Jose Martinez Ruiz, who often wrote under the name "Azorín". This group of writers (an original list of authors identified by Azorín was later expanded), redefined the essential quality of Spain and its history and culture. These authors, which included Ruben Darío, Jose Ortega y Gasset, Ramon del Valle Inclan, and Jacinto Benavente y Martinez greatly influenced later Spanish writers.|
