CARLOS V (1500 - 1558)
|Adrian VI||Clement VII|
During the life of Carlos there were 10 Popes. Carlos knew one before he became Pope and captured the other one while he was the Pope.
Adrian VI had been Carlos' religion teacher when Carlos was a young boy. He only ruled for about 2 years during the reign of Carlos. During that time he unsuccessfully tried to make a peace treaty between Carlos and the King of France.
The Pope that followed Adrian VI was Clement VII. He was not a very religious man, but rather was interested in politics. In May 1527 Carlos captured the city of Rome and held the Pope captive for 6 months. He had a good reason because the Pope was trying to get France to invade Spain. In 1530 Carlos made Clement VII crown him as Holy Roman Emperor.
