His last years he was very
tired, and thought that his son Felipe was able to rule, and he decided to
retire to a monastic life with the monks there, where he spent his last years
dedicated to pray and reflection.

On September 1558 Carlos was dying. He asked to be buried with a huge cross in his hands close to his favorite painting La Gloria - The Glory, by Tiziano.
He also asked that his son collect the body of his wife so that they could rest together forever.
On September 21, 1558 Carlos died. He was 58 years old.
