The French plan was to go from Veracruz, to México City, the capital.  They thought that once they captured México City the rest of the country would surrender.  8,000 troops marched towards the capital.  About 100 miles east was waiting 4000 Mexican troops, some of who were actually just farmers.  On the morning of May 5, 1862 they met in battle in a town called Puebla and the Méxicans defeated the French.
