Unfortunately the French, eventually did capture the capital.  But, the French were slowed down enough, so that by the time that they finally captured the capital the war in the United States had ended.  The United States was able to send troops to help the Mexicans drive the French out in 1867.  The United States were thankful to the Mexican people because they knew that if not for their bravery on May 5, 1862, the French plan might have succeeded.  And maybe today there would not be a United States.  So that is why "Cinco de Mayo" is important not only to México, but also to the United States.
