It is estimated that 250 million people speak Spanish as their first language, making it the third most popular language in the world.

Spanish is the official (or one of the official) language of 20 countries in the world.  In Europe, there is of course Spain.  In Africa, the tiny country of Equatorial Guinea also has Spanish as the official language.  And the state of New Mexico lists Spanish along with English as an official language in its Constitution.
