PAÍSES DE HABLA HISPANA

The Spanish you are learning is that which is spoken in Spain.  As you may know thhe English spoken in England differ slightly, in the pronunciation and usage of certain words, than the English that is spoken in the United States.  This is also the case between the Spanish spoken in Spain and the Spanish spoken in Central America, South America and the Caribbean.  For example take the English word "bus".  In Spain they would call it an "autobús".  However, look at the chart below:

Location

Local word for "bus"

Central America and Mexico

camión

Argentina and Venezuela

colectivo

Peru and Uruguay

ómnibus

Chile

micro

Cuba

guagua

To further confuse things a "camión" means "truck" everywhere including in Mexico, so to be clear they sometimes refer to a truck as a "camión de carga".
