CHARLES V (1500 - 1558)
Felipe son of Carlos
By 1542 Carlos was now 42. He may his eldest son, Felipe, King of Milan. Francis I, however had wanted to gain control of Milan so in August 1542, he once again declared war on Carlos.
Carlos was not financially in great shape. Although during this time, Mexico and Peru were conquered it would really not be until 1550 before Spain would really begin to enjoy the wealth from America. In the meanwhile, Carlos had to borrow money to finance his latest battle. The French king was also having money problems so as result although the war lasted for two years, by the time the peace treaty was signed nothing had changed.
